Frederick Douglass [Frederick Douglass]
(1817–95) a US slave who escaped in 1838, wrote the story of his life as a slave and later went to England, where friends gave him enough money to return to America and buy his freedom. He became the leading ↑African American working to end the system of ↑slavery and was the US government’s representative to Haiti from 1889 to 1891. He also established the North Star newspaper in Rochester, New York.
